Japan Forwarding to Mainland China: Cost, Time, Customs and Eligible Items

Learn how Japan forwarding to mainland China is priced, what end-to-end timing includes, how personal-item customs works and which batteries or cosmetics need checks.

Updated:2026-07-19
Direct answer: Eligible Japanese goods can be forwarded to mainland China. Final cost depends on chargeable weight, route and optional services, while total time also includes receiving in Japan, consolidation, payment, export and Chinese customs. Declare the real item name, quantity and value and follow current customs and carrier rules.

Confirm that the item can be transported before comparing routes. Clothing, books and ordinary household goods are generally easier to arrange than batteries, liquids, food or high-value branded goods. The same product can be treated differently based on quantity, use and destination rules.

How the forwarding cost is calculated

The total can include domestic shipping in Japan, the JChere handling fee, international freight, optional services and destination taxes. International freight may use the higher of actual and volumetric weight, so a large light carton can still cost more.

  • Enter destination, weight and dimensions on the fee page to see current routes and estimates.
  • Compare carton volume before consolidating; removing excess store packaging can matter as much as combining parcels.
  • Do not assume destination tax, remote-area or customs service charges are included in basic freight.

When transit time starts

A carrier transit estimate normally starts after dispatch from the warehouse and is not the total time from store order to delivery. Add store dispatch, warehouse receiving, consolidation or reinforcement, payment, flight scheduling and destination customs.

  • Pre-orders and split seller shipments delay the point at which consolidation can begin.
  • Holidays, capacity, inspection, document requests and local delivery can change arrival dates.
  • For a fixed use date, leave customs buffer instead of counting back from the fastest estimate.

Personal-item customs and import tax in mainland China

Mailed personal items must be for personal use, in reasonable quantities and truthfully declared. Current Chinese customs guidance states that from December 1, 2024 the per-shipment limit for personal items sent from overseas is RMB 2,000, and assessed import tax of RMB 50 or less is exempt. Customs determines the taxable value, rate and whether an entry must be handled as commercial cargo.

  • Keep the order, payment record and product page available for a document request.
  • Do not undervalue goods, use vague descriptions or label multiple identical products as old personal effects.
  • Commercial quantities or licensed items may require formal cargo declaration.

Items that are easier or harder to transport

Clothing, shoes, bags, books, toys and non-hazardous household goods are generally easier to arrange. Lithium devices, spare batteries, perfume, aerosols, nail polish, alcohol, food, medicine and oversized goods require item-level route and import checks.

  • For batteries, confirm chemistry, installed or loose status, capacity and device condition.
  • For liquids and cosmetics, confirm alcohol, flammability and pressurized aerosol packaging.
  • One restricted item can force the entire carton to be rerouted, split, returned or delayed.
Important: A customs value threshold does not guarantee duty-free entry or release. Declare the true transaction and check current routes before buying batteries, liquids, food, medicine or high-value goods.

Frequently asked questions

Will I pay tax when forwarding from Japan to mainland China?
Possibly. Customs evaluates the item type, taxable value, quantity and current rate. Tax that meets the current exemption condition can be waived, but this cannot be guaranteed in advance.
Is consolidation always cheaper than separate parcels?
No. It can reduce minimum charges and duplicate packaging, but a larger carton may be billed at higher volumetric weight and a restricted item can reduce available routes.
Can game consoles, headphones and cameras be sent to China?
Some routes accept devices with installed batteries, but loose batteries, capacity, quantity, model and destination requirements must be checked item by item before purchase.
Why is total delivery longer than the route estimate?
The route estimate often covers only post-dispatch transit and excludes store dispatch, receiving, consolidation, payment waiting, inspection and additional customs documents.
