Japan Forwarding to Vietnam: Shipping, Customs, VAT and Clearance
Forward Japanese purchases to Vietnam with guidance on shipping costs, delivery time, low-value import tax changes, declarations, VAT, restricted items and clearance records.
●Quick answer
Eligible goods can be forwarded from Japan to Vietnam. A key policy change is that Vietnam removed the previous VAT exemption for low-value express imports from 18 February 2025. Do not use old advice saying shipments under VND 1 million are automatically exempt when estimating current costs. Actual import charges still depend on the goods, value and current rules.

Overview
Budget for more than international freight: import taxes/VAT and document requests may arise in Vietnam. Food, supplements, medicines, cosmetics, batteries and other controlled goods deserve pre-purchase checking.
1. Calculate shipping from the final packed parcel
Consolidation and repacking change final weight, dimensions and chargeable weight. Compare routes by tracking, insurance and estimated delivery time as well as price.
- Watch dimensional weight for bulky light goods.
- Compare chargeable weight before and after consolidation.
- Use the options and rates shown when you create the shipment.
2. Old low-value VAT exemption information is no longer current
The Vietnamese Government states that the previous VAT exemption for low-value express imports was removed from 18 February 2025. Old references to a VND 1 million exemption should not be used as today’s budget assumption.
- Check current Government/Customs guidance before shipping.
- Budget for possible import VAT and other charges.
- Do not use splitting or under-declaration as a substitute for accurate declarations.
3. Product categories can trigger extra import conditions
Food, supplements, medicines, cosmetics, batteries, wireless equipment and similar products can require documents, labels, permits or specific routes.
- First confirm that JChere can transport the item.
- Then check Vietnamese import requirements.
- Larger quantities of identical goods may be treated differently from personal-use parcels.
4. Keep records that explain the real transaction
Save the order, store, product URL, payment evidence, quantity, unit price, ingredients or model information.
- Use specific item descriptions rather than vague “daily goods” or “gift”.
- Keep declared value consistent with the payment record.
- Vietnamese Customs and competent agencies make final tax and release decisions.
