Japan Forwarding to the United States: Shipping, Cost, Time and Import Guide

Learn about Japan forwarding methods, cost and timing to the United States, plus import charges after the de minimis suspension, customs data and item restrictions.

Updated:2026-07-19
Direct answer: Eligible Japanese goods can be forwarded to the United States. Freight depends on the current route, actual or volumetric weight, dimensions and services. Prepare accurate product description, value, material, use and country of origin. The United States suspended duty-free de minimis treatment for commercial low-value shipments worldwide from August 29, 2025, so low-value parcels can incur duty, tax or carrier clearance charges.

For U.S. forwarding, consider speed and parcel size together with the agency regulating the product and the import cost. Clothing, books, collectibles and electronics may use different tariff classifications. Food, medicine, cosmetics, wireless equipment and animal or plant products may also fall under FDA, FCC, USDA or other agency rules.

Shipping methods and cost components

Available methods vary by weight, dimensions, item and destination ZIP code. Total cost can include Japan domestic delivery, JChere handling, international freight, optional services and U.S. duty, tax, advancement or brokerage charges.

  • Use the current fee page to compare timing, tracking, compensation and size limits.
  • Large light parcels may use volumetric weight, so estimate the carton before consolidating.
  • Do not use the former US$800 de minimis exemption as a current pricing assumption.

End-to-end timing and U.S. delivery

Route transit normally starts after JChere dispatch. Total time also includes store dispatch, receiving, consolidation, payment, export, U.S. entry processing and final delivery. Long distances, remote areas, severe weather, holidays and customs examination can materially affect delivery.

  • Use a verifiable English address and include apartment or unit number.
  • Provide a reachable phone and email for duty or document notices.
  • For an event or gift deadline, allow buffer for import processing and local delivery.

Import cost after the de minimis suspension

Official U.S. guidance states that duty-free de minimis treatment under 19 U.S.C. 1321(a)(2)(C) stopped being available for commercial shipments worldwide from August 29, 2025 and continues in 2026. Actual duty depends on classification, origin, value and current rates, and collection can differ between postal and express routes.

  • Low value no longer means automatic duty-free entry, so budget for possible import charges.
  • Declare transaction value, material, use and country of manufacture accurately and retain invoices.
  • A carrier may collect duty, advancement or clearance charges before or at delivery.

Product regulation and transport restrictions

Beyond ordinary Customs requirements, food, medicine, medical devices, cosmetics, wireless equipment, animal or plant goods and intellectual-property-sensitive items can be regulated by other U.S. agencies. Lithium devices must also meet air dangerous-goods and carrier packaging rules.

  • Check FDA and personal-import requirements before buying food, supplements, medicine or medical goods.
  • Check the relevant agency for wireless devices, biological material and protected-species products.
  • Counterfeit goods, false declarations, damaged batteries and prohibited articles can be detained, returned or destroyed.
Important: U.S. import policy and tariff rates are changing. This page cannot guarantee tax. Check current CBP, agency, carrier and JChere information when placing the forwarding order.

Frequently asked questions

Is a parcel under US$800 from Japan still duty-free?
Do not assume the former exemption applies. The United States suspended worldwide commercial de minimis duty-free treatment from August 29, 2025; current charges depend on the product, origin, value and policy.
Does JChere freight to the U.S. include import duty?
Do not normally assume it does. Duty, tax, carrier advancement or brokerage can be collected separately in the United States; check current route terms.
Does consolidation affect U.S. customs?
It affects total declared value, product mix, volumetric weight and regulatory scope. Confirm all items can use one route and list each product completely.
Can lithium battery electronics be sent to the United States?
Some devices have eligible routes, but installed or loose status, capacity, quantity, condition, packaging and current carrier rules must be confirmed.
