Separate risks by component

Amplifiers and CD players concentrate weight, floor speakers are bulky and magnetic, turntables have an arm and platter, portable Bluetooth units may contain batteries, and tube amplifiers contain fragile glass. List a system component by component.

• Identify the main unit, left and right speakers, subwoofer, remote and battery accessories.
• Provide V, Ah or mAh and Wh for wireless gear and headphone amplifiers.
• Supply any maker magnetic-field or shipping data for large speakers.

Factory transport locks and tailored cushioning

Secure a turntable platter, arm, cartridge and dust cover. Protect amplifier and speaker knobs, terminals and corners. A high-end maker's double carton, moulded foam and transport screws are difficult to replace with loose fill.

• If the original carton is missing, confirm an overcarton or crate before purchase.
• Restrain or separately protect tubes according to the maker and record their positions.
• Never place a heavy amplifier on a turntable or small speaker.

Volumetric weight, power, warranty and import

Speaker freight may be driven by volume rather than net weight, and a system can need several cartons and insurance. Before using Japanese 100V gear overseas, check the rating plate, frequency, peak draw, earthing and transformer capacity. Warranty and wireless approvals may be Japan-only.

• Estimate each factory carton before deciding to buy the complete system.
• Do not judge electrical compatibility from plug shape alone.
• Declare amplifier, loudspeaker or turntable, quantity and transaction value accurately.
