Separate live swords, iaito and replicas

An edged steel blade, registered art sword, blunt practice sword, zinc-alloy replica, wooden sword and fittings can have different treatment. Do not rely on a marketplace category or the words toy and decoration.

• Request images of the blade, point, signature, full and blade length and material.
• Confirm whether it is edged or dismountable and whether registration matches it.
• A kitchen knife, folding knife and Japanese sword are not one category.

Japanese export evidence must match the object

The Agency for Cultural Affairs says a registered firearm or sword export application includes a copy of the registration front. If signature, length, curvature or peg holes do not match photographs, a certificate may not be issued. Multiple swords require individual material.

• Confirm the seller will supply the original registration and required images.
• Allow review time in storage and dispatch planning; do not promise immediate shipment.
• Follow the authority's process for return of registration after export.

Destination law and carrier form separate gates

A destination may regulate edge length, sharpening, curved blades, purpose, age, licences or locality. Postal and courier services can refuse a weapon even when law permits possession.

• Obtain written advice from destination customs, police or weapons authority before buying.
• Match permit name, address and item data.
• Declare Japanese sword or sword, material, blade length, use and value; do not conceal it as craftwork.
